Michigan joined the union in 1837. Before colonization, indigenous populations lived in the area longer than recorded history. These populations included the Ojibwe (also called Chippewa), the Potawatomi (also called the Bode’wadmi), and the Odawa (sometimes called Ottowa). These three tribes joined together to create a partnership called the Three Fires. The group worked and lived together, and many members made dome-shaped homes called wigwams.
After Michigan joined the union, more and more people started moving to the state on the hunt for land. Many of these travelers came from the eastern U.S., a notoriously crowded area without much space to build a home.
New people in Michigan meant new houses were getting built. By the 1950s, housing booms were taking off in areas like Redford Township, turning Michigan into a state full of newly built homes.
Today, Michigan has a population of about 10 million people. Recent data says the typical Michigan house costs $208,337, which is lower than the national average — but that doesn’t mean the state hasn’t seen some pricey houses over the years. In fact, some homes in Michigan sell for tens of millions of dollars.
