10 Rarest Xbox One Controllers Ever Made

The Xbox One came out back in 2013 and had been the latest Xbox model on the market for many years. Microsoft released updated versions of the years: the One S and the One X. The controller used on all versions of the Xbox One is the Xbox Wireless Controller and several special edition designs and colorways have been released over the years. This list contains some of the rarest Xbox One controllers, some of which were never available for sale. The very rarest of these controllers were sweepstakes prizes or gifts to the Microsoft Xbox team.

As of June 2021, the information on this list is as accurate as possible and will be updated as needed.

  1. Halo 5: Guardians Master Chief and Spartan Locke

    For the release of Halo 5: Guardians, Xbox with a ton of limited edition gear. This included two different controllers, one inspired by the iconic Master Chief and the other based on Halo 5’s new antihero Spartan Locke. The Halo 5: Guardians controllers came with decorative boxes that matched the design of the controllers. They also came with a DLC code for a unique REQ pack that only comes with that specific controller. The REQ pack consisted of five REQ cards, one of which was an Ultra Rare item. Both of the controllers retailed for about $69.99.

    Prior to the 2016 Holiday Season, Xbox announced that it was releasing several new Xbox One S bundles in limited quantities. There were three bundles with special colorways: Deep Blue, Military Green, and Storm Grey. The Deep Blue Xbox One S Gears of War 4 Bundle was a GameStop and Microsoft Store exclusive. The Military Green and Storm Grey controllers were available as Xbox One S Battlefield 1 Special Edition Bundles. The Storm Grey bundle was only sold at Walmart and Microsoft Stores. Military Green bundles were available in U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand at various retailers. None of the controllers were ever sold separately.

    The limited edition Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Xbox One controller was one of the earliest special edition controllers for the Xbox One and has since become incredibly desirable. The Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare controller looks very cool and comes in a slate gray with silver and gold accents. While the controller was sold separately for $69.99, more than a regular Xbox One controller, there was also a Call of Duty:Advanced Warfare Xbox One bundle that had a matching console. Currently, bundles are priced at a few thousand dollars while controllers are being listed for as high as $500!

    The Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Xbox One bundle also came with early access to the game and double XP on November 3 (the bundle’s release date), as well as two in-game weapons.

    For the 2016 Holiday Season, Xbox and Pizza Hut teamed up to give away Xbox One S consoles and limited edition Pizza Hut controllers. According to the official rules there were about 1,140 first place prizes up for grabs which consisted of a 500GB Xbox One S console with a standard white controller, a digital copy of Minecraft with some of its expansion DLC, and the exclusive Pizza Hut Red controller. There was also a grand prize that included the first prize package as well as a 4K TV and audio system.

    Did You Know?

    The special Pizza Hut Xbox One controller was the same shade of red as Pizza Hut’s logo, had white accents, and even had the Pizza Hut logo on the center.

    For X019, which took place in London, Xbox collaborated with DPM Studio – the camouflage division of Hardy Blechman’s London based streetwear label, maharishi – to release the DPM X019 Exclusive controller as well as official Xbox apparel. The DPM X019 Exclusive featured DPM Studio’s Aquabrush print, which was a custom camouflage made for X019. Only 1,000 DPM X019 Exclusive controllers were produced.

    Immediately after the X019 episode of Inside Xbox on November 14th, the DPM X019 Exclusive controller went on sale as Microsoft’s online store for $99.99. A few of the controllers were also available for purchase each day of X019 at the Copper Box Arena and at the flagship Microsoft Store in London on November 14.

    The Aquabrush camouflage of the DPM X019 Exclusive controller was inspired by the traditional 1950’s lizard-brushstroke camouflage and the River Thames in London.

    To celebrate the release of Xbox One X, which was called Project Scorpio while it was still underwraps, Xbox released the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition console and controller bundle. While no exact figures were revealed, Xbox only produced a very limited number of the console and matching controller. The Project Scorpio console has a sleek graphic pattern in all black and features the words “Project Scorpio.” The controller is all black and also has Project Scorpio on it. The Xbox One X Project Scorpio bundle was priced at $499 and only available through a pre-order. The controller was never sold separately.

    The graphic pattern on the exterior of the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition console was inspired by the original Xbox.

    The very limited edition Sugar Skull Xbox One controllers were only available through a giveaway for attendees of the X018 event in Mexico City. Only 15 Sugar Skull controllers were produced, making them some of the rarest controllers out there. While 14 of the Sugar Skull controllers were up for grabs at the actually convention, Xbox decided to hold a separate sweepstakes for Xbox players based in Mexico City for the last controller. Players who earned 20,000 game points through Xbox Game Pass games during a certain period were entered into the sweepstakes to win the last Sugar Skull controller.

    In 2015, during both the PAX East and PAX West (still called PAX Prime at the time) conventions, Xbox decided to giveaway a number of one-of-a-kind Xbox One controllers. There were seven unique controllers available at PAX West, while there were nine at PAX East. The PAX West Xbox One controllers included: Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, Fallout 4, Rainbow Six Siege, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, and IGN. Some of the PAX East controllers were based on The Witcher 3, Halo 5: Guardians, Evolve, and Battlefield Hardline.

    Attendees of each convention were eligible to enter the sweepstakes to win one of the custom controllers. To enter, they had to follow @Xbox on Twitter, take a photo of their favorite custom controller, and tweet the photo with the sweepstakes hashtag.

    In December 2020, to celebrate the Season 2 finale of “The Mandalorian,” Xbox unveiled a pair of custom Mandalorian-themed Xbox One controllers. One controller was a bright orange with a picture of Grogu aka Baby Yoda. The other controller was a blue with a picture of The Mandalorian. Xbox teamed up with Lucasfilm Games on the design for the controllers, which came in a an exclusive Star Wars-themed mailer. Fans in the United States had a chance to enter into the sweepstakes from December 17th to 28th.

    Did You Know?

    While the custom Mandalorian-themed Xbox One controllers were never for sale, Xbox did release a limited edition Mandalorian controller that was compatible with Xbox One, as well as Xbox Series X / S systems. The Mandalorian controller looked like Mando’s Beskar armor and came with a matching magnetic stand and retailed for $160. It sold out quickly and has now become fairly rare as well.


  19. Launch Team Edition

    The original Launch Team Edition controllers are the rarest Xbox One Controllers out there because they were never available to the public. The custom Xbox One controllers (and consoles) were only given out to a few Microsoft employees that worked on the original Xbox One. Instead of the standard black of the Xbox One, the Launch Team Edition controller and console was white with black accents and stamped with the words “I Made This” and “Launch Team 2013.”

    Although the Launch Team Edition controller and console were very special, naturally, some of the people who received them immediately put them up for sale on eBay for as much as $3,500. As of this writing, there aren’t any Launch Team Edition controllers or consoles for sale.

    Did You Know?

    When the Xbox Series X was released in November 2020, Microsoft once again gifted the launch team with custom controllers that had the words “Project Scarlett” on the bottom, which was the codename for the Xbox Series X.
