14 Rarest CryptoKitties in the World

| |

CryptoKitties are the Pokémon and Beanie Babies of the 21st century and exist in the digital world of blockchain and cryptocurrencies. The blockchain game – which allows users to collect, trade, sell, and breed colorful digital cats – launched in late 2017 and peaked in 2018. The popularity of CryptoKitties has died down a bit, but they appear to be picking up steam again as NFTs (non-fungible tokens) have taken the world by storm.

Because of the large number of attributes or “cattributes” of CryptoKitties, it is hard to place any sort of value on them. Some have been sold for a couple hundred Ether (worth less than $200K back in 2018), but sales have mostly slumped. However, the first generation of CryptoKitties, Gen 0, is capped at 50,000 and not all of them have been released. The founders have kept several thousand in the vault for future special occasions. These first generation CryptoKitties as well as several exclusives are rare because there are only one of each of them in existence and they cannot be bred.

For this list we featured all of the exclusive CryptoKitties that had a limit of 1. We also featured the most valuable CryptoKitty based on the price it fetched at auction. With the exception of the first three entries on this list, the rest of the CryptoKitties were arranged in alphabetical order. As of May 2021, the information on this list is as accurate as possible and will be updated as needed.

Honorable Mention: Shiny Fancy CryptoKitties

In late 2019, CryptoKitites introduced a new game mechanic, Shiny Fancy cats, making breeding and rarity more complicated. Shiny Fancy CryptoKitties – special versions of Fancy CryptoKitties, with special art – are similar to the idea behind Shiny Pokémon, which appear when certain breeding conditions are met. However, breeding Shiny Fancy kitties is much more difficult and much rarer. Some Shiny Fancies may never appear as the breeding window has closed. Quite a few Shiny Fancy CryptoKitties have already been bred and more are likely to appear in the future.

CryptoKitties went live on November 22, 2017 and its founders initially released 100 CryptoKitties, Genesis and CryptoKitties #2 – # 100. The Founder Cats are all unique and cannot be bred. They are the ancestors of all of the later generation CryptoKitties. Due to their rarity and Gen 0 status, Founder Cats are highly sought after. Several of the Founder Cats have been sold for over 200 Ether, which is now worth a couple hundred thousand dollars. Besides Genesis, the Founder Cats did not come with unique names, but many have been named by their owners.

    Dragon

At first glance, CryptoKitty #896775 aka Dragon is pretty unremarkable. Dragon has no special features and was not an exclusive or special edition. However, for some reason, Dragon was sold for 600 Ether ($172,000 at the time) a month after it was born, and Dragon is currently the most valuable CryptoKitty based on this sale. No one knows why Dragon’s owner rabono paid that much for a seemingly average CryptoKitty when there are kitties that are much more unique. Some theories for the high price range from money laundering to rabono just really liking the way Dragon looks.

  26. Reason for Rarity: Very first CryptoKitty; only 1

Genesis is the rarest CryptoKitty of all time because it is the very first CryptoKitty and the only one of its kind in existence. Of the first 100 Founder CryptoKitties, Genesis is entirely unique and has a cute design featuring a diamond on its belly and forehead. The other 99 Founder CryptoKitties all look very similar. Genesis was born on November 22, 2017 and sold a few weeks later. It has never been put up for sale since then.

    Did You Know?

The owner of Genesis, Stimpson J. Cat, purchased this rare CryptoKitty for 246.926 Ether (about $119,328 at the time). This much Ether is currently worth $750,383.
